Andrew Hickl is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the Allen Institute, where he leads teams in harnessing computational techniques to drive data-driven breakthroughs in the biosciences. With over three decades of experience at the forefront of artificial intelligence, Andrew has dedicated his career to solving complex and meaningful problems that advance both science and society. Andrew has held leadership roles at renowned organizations including Microsoft, Intel, Accenture, Vulcan Inc., and Rewired Ventures. He is a co-founder of three pioneering AI startups—Swingly, Extractiv, and A.R.O. Inc.—and was instrumental in the founding of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Vulcan Proving Ground. An accomplished researcher in natural language processing, machine learning, computer vision, and artificial intelligence, Andrew has collaborated with IARPA, DARPA, and the U.S. Department of Defense, with his work published in top-tier proceedings such as AAAI, ACL, SIGIR, and NeurIPS. His leadership continues to shape the application of AI in solving some of the world’s most complex challenges.
